If you like port wine, a visit to Porto is essential! The city's historic district Vila Nova de Gaia is home to many of Portugal's most important, and oldest, port wine producers. Some of them have their own museums now, including Sandemann's. Housed in an impressive granite building from 1811, the Sandemann Museum takes visitors back to 1790, when Scotsman George Sandemann started dealing in Porto and Sherry wines. Charting the company's progress in historic photographs, paintings, antique bottles and ceramics, the museum also displays an impressive collection of images about the Douro valley's wine production in general. Foz do Douro only dates back to the 19th century, but it is regarded as a historic treasure too. A 51 minute drive (about 74 km) via the A28 motorway along the coast, going north, lies one of the most beautiful historic cities of northern Portugal: Viana do Castelo. Located at the mouth of the Lima River, the city first reveals its beauty from the hilltop of Santa Luzia. At the center of old Viana lies the Praça da República, from where nearly all streets lead to historic treasures. But the square has its own: the City Hall, the Paços do Concelho, and the 16th century Misericórdia building and adjacent fountain. Within a short walk lies the Romanesque parish church, the Igreja Matriz.

Viana is well known for its gold work, especially its filigree work in gold. Many fine examples of this ancient art of goldsmiths can be seen at the Museu do Traje, which also houses costumes. More gold work, especially tableware, can be seen at the Municipal Museum. More modern attractions of the city include jet skiing and windsurfing, sailing and body-boarding at the city's sandy beaches.
