An exploration of the northwest of Portugal starts with a walking tour of historic Porto, where

Taking the motorway A4 will take you to the Douro wine-producing region, and its picturesque wine-growing villages. To reach Salzedas and Ucanhas you take the A4, then the A24 and then the N226. Favaios and Provesende are reached via the A4, then the IC5. The capital of Port wine is the city of Peso da Régua in the Lower Corgo part of northwest Portugal. It takes about one and a half hours via the A4 motorway to reach Peso da Régua, where visitors can learn about the Douro region's wine heritage at the Museu do Douro, (Rua Marquês de Pombal, http://www.museudodouro.pt/ ) and sample some of the local wines, too.
